A wonderful time was had by all
March 30 marked the graduation of our 34th class! The multi-purpose room at the Berkeley Adult School where our party was held was resplendent with the aroma of tempting foods and pastries. All 17 graduates spoke about the impact THE BREAD PROJECT has made on their lives. Some members of the audience were moved to tears, some gave us generous donations, and many raved about the food. If you have never been to one of our graduation parties, please come to the next one on June 15 (12:00 – 2:00 p.m.) at 1701 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. It is an event not to be missed, and the food prepared by our graduates is always fantastic!
In the words of the graduates
“I have developed the skill of baking cakes, cookies,
bread and beyond. I have not received any calls for a job nor
have I applied yet, but I am very confident that I will get a
job. I love to bake, and I have gained so much experience during
these nine weeks.” Christine Callegari
THE BREAD PROJECT has done wonders for my self-esteem.
I think that I have a real future ahead of me. I feel very sad
to be leaving.” Ann Cain
Life after graduation
Luisa came to us in 2002 when she lost her job and
decided to start a career in baking. After her stints as a cake
decorator and a baker at Safeway and Toot Sweets, she joined
Whole Foods and has been happily employed in a bakery job for
five years. Luisa now wants to teach in our program! What a way
to give back!
John, a recent graduate who had experienced trouble
with the law, is now on the production line making granola bars
at Traci’s Gourmet Granola. He also manages our bakery café in
the evening. John is now diligently working towards his goals of
having a stable job and getting married soon.
Jose, a buddy of John’s at THE BREAD PROJECT, is now
his co-worker at Traci’s Gourmet Granola! Jose is elated that we
were able to find him a job despite his background. He, too, is
determined to have a fresh start in life.
